THE SCORPIONE LIVES™
Scagliarini Brand
In 1949 Guido Scagliarini founded Abarth & C. and served as the company’s CEO. ABARTH was financed by Scagliarini’s father, Armando Scagliarini, President and the majority shareholder (990/998 shares or 99,2%), and Guido’s Bologna residence served as the company’s seat. ABARTH was named after a business associate and friend of Scagliarini, and the corporate logo, a stylized scorpion, was used to depict Guido’s astrologic sign.
The ABARTH logo placed the stylized scorpion over a shape used to portray the concept of triumph. The background colors yellow and red were used to represent the area colors of “The Motor Valley”, or Modena to the north and Bologna to the south, respectively. The blue hues of the brand name background and scorpion inlays refer to Bologna specifically, the birthplace of ABARTH, and to Emilia-Romagna, generally.
With the sale of Abarth & C. to Fiat SpA in 1971 the ABARTH logo was used under license by FIAT until the brand’s demise on October 1, 1981. The original scorpion design remained the property of Guido Scagliarini, however, and was first used on its own in 1972. Today, G. Scagliarini & Cº. continues use of the 1949 stylized scorpion design on its own, and as part of the company’s brand heraldry.
The SCAGLIARINI™ brand heraldry draws inspiration from the original ABARTH logo, and incorporates Guido Scagliarini’s design initiative of applying a checkered flag to the roof panel of ABARTH racing cars. The “hidden” plus sign comes from the Comune di Bologna flag, and the blue hues refer to the Squadre Azzurre, Italy’s national sport teams, and to Bologna and Emilia-Romagna; The Scorpione Lives™.
